Yeonmi Park is an amazing young North Korean activist who escaped China in 2007. Her family was very connected to politics. When the economy took a turn for the worst they became involved in black market trading. Her father was captured and sent to a labor camp which devastated the future of Yeonmi and her mother. They had no choice but to flee to China to try to escape to a better life. They went from being wealthy to facing starvation and poverty. Unfortunately while trying to flee to Mongolia, they were captured themselves by human traffickers. Once her father was reunited with her family they escaped from North Korea with the help of Christian missionaries. Before crossing the border into China, Yeonmi of yeonmi.net and her mother had to cross several mountains and frozen rivers. They were even threatened by human traffickers regarding reporting their whereabouts. In exchange Yeonmi’s mother was raped right in front of her.
In 2008 Yeonmi’s father was diagnosed with colon cancer and died at age 45. She and her mother were unable to have a funeral for her father in fear they would be caught by Chinese authorities. Yeonmi is a speaker and advocate for human rights. She became a YouTube sensation when her speech at the One Young World 2014 Summit in Ireland went viral. The Summit brings people together from around the world to discuss solutions to world issues. She has also written for the Washington Post. She volunteers for programs like the Freedom Factory Corporation. What I think is most important is that she is a member of LINK which stand for Liberty in North Korea. It is a non profit organization that resuces North Korean refugees from hiding in China and helps them resettle to South Korea or the United States.
Yeonmi is only 21 years old and truly and inspiration. Her current journey and passion is to help people get their freedom back. She worked as a talk show host on a podcast called North Korea Today which talks about the life of refugees after their escape. What a perfect and fitting outlet for Yeonmi Park. She is determined to fight for the human rights of people in North Korea. She is definitely not a supporter of Kim Jong-Un to say the least. She believes he abuses his power and is responsible for killing 80 people in one day for watching a movie or reading the bible. While her story is truly horrific and saddening, her speeches are helping to change the world. This young woman is someone to keep your eye on and continues to inspire with her speeches across the country.
